STEVEN WILSON - Insurgentes DVD

‘Insurgentes’ Lasse Hoille’s film about musician Steven Wilson, is released on DVD by Kscope on November 8th. Insurgentes is a musical road movie that follows the making of Wilson’s solo record of the same name, and is a portrait of an increasingly rare artist who works with music and media out of love and not for fame and fortune....

Being a huge fan of Porcupine Tree and ultimately the work of Steven Wilson; both as a solo artist and a collaborator within the music industry; this DVD was a must watch for me! It is not very often; in fact, as mentioned above ‘rare’ to get such an insight into this intelligent and informative musician and artist. Wilson returns to the likes of his old secondary school and recounts his first ever performance; discussing how he felt and to use the cliché ‘where it all began’. This is not a man eager to be in the spotlight and to be hollered at in the street by every individual; but more a guy on a mission to explore his own potential and unlock his future aspirations through a variety of media deliveries. What is evident, is that any time crowd footage is shown; the love and passion demonstrated by the individuals (who are packed in to every corner of the venue) puts a visual on exactly what draw Steven Wilson has. He really seems to have the midas touch (albeit without the curse), but his craft is merely an extension of his worth as a human being and the precise and carefully arrangements show his deeper understand of the ‘music’.

The clip below gives an example of Wilson’s vision and understanding of the state this so called inspiring musical world is currently in.

Taking a sneak peek inside various locations around Hemel Hempstead, Wilsons’ work space is not what I was expecting. But, most importantly, the results that he is able to create in a stripped out bedroom; jam packed with audio and video devices o’plenty. And what did I love best about this DVD? Seeing Wilson uncover a collection of homemade equipment, built by his father. It’s just amazing what people are able to create and like pieces of a puzzle; the Steven Wilson experience gets ever clearer. Everything feels right about this musical journey and it’s no wonder that Steven made it.

A fantastic DVD and well worth getting hold of on it’s release.
